Tribute to a Remarkable Woman
I had the great pleasure of meeting Jeanie Barkley and her family through their involvement at the First Church of Nashua. Anyone who knew her can tell you that Jeanie lit up any room she entered with her ever-present smile, her sparkling eyes, and her infectious laugh. Her sense of humor helped to sustain her through the unimaginable ordeal of a ravenous disease. Her joy of life never flagged; her faith never wavered. It is impossible to speak about Jeanie without using superlatives. She was, quite simply, a fountain of energy, friendship, love and kindness to all whose lives she touched.
Jeanie lived to help others and, although her life on this earth ended far too soon, her altruism lives on through the Jeanie Barkley Memorial Fund. The first scholarship from this fund was awarded to an

High School
graduate in June, and the goal is to continue giving scholarships to graduates who have demonstrated a potential and desire to have a positive effect on the lives of others, as Jeanie did.
On September 12, an auction and dinner dance will be held at Alpine Grove in Hollis to raise money for the Jeanie Barkley Memorial Fund. For information on tickets, donations, or the fund itself, go to www.JeanieBarkley.org.
As I write, I can hear a little Jeanie-giggle over my right shoulder. She would be surprised and amused at everyone making such a fuss over her. But she would be enormously touched and gratified that people are reaching out to others in her name.
